No matter which bench you were on, Tuesday’s season opener was an attention-getter.

It was just a little more enjoyable for Eastern Greene.

The Thunderbirds routed host Lighthouse Christian in girls’ basketball, 70-19, scoring the program’s most points in almost four years with a dominant effort at both ends of the court.

“Our girls had a blast being out there playing basketball again,” Eastern coach Greg Burton said. “I’m not sure why, but with the pandemic it feels like it’s been forever since last season ended.”

Sophomore Kenady Hudson led the way with 15 points, while senior Shelley Tarr added 13 and Zoie Ault chipped in 10 points as the T-Birds enjoyed their biggest output since a 96-13 win at Eminence on Jan. 17, 2017.

“It’s difficult to single anyone out that played better than the rest,” Burton said. “Everyone scored and contributed on both ends. It’s always good to win the first one.

“We made a ton of mistakes that we’ll have to clean up, but the girls played extremely hard.”

Eastern will host South Knox for its home opener on Saturday.
